Rupert Murdoch

Born in 1931, Rupert Murdoch is an Australian-American media/publishing magnate who has a worldwide communications empire. Combining sensationalist journalism with aggressive promotion, Murdoch's News Corporation spans five continents and operates under the slogan "Producing and distributing the most compelling news, information and entertainment to the farthest reaches of the globe."

As the head of News Corporation, Murdoch controls numerous properties including newspapers, magazines, cable networks, movie studios, sports teams, and additional companies in the following industries: broadcasting, book publishing, direct broadcast satellite, and television. He is leading a charge against AOL Time Warner in the race to dominate the future of interactive television.   Critics call Murdoch a "modern day pirate" and a "sun king". He became a U.S. citizen in 1985.
